Ok so if none of the above lets try a process of elimination;
Not opened since 1980, so nothing useful then.
Presented in 1980 so could be a gift.
Not a retirement gift as you would be too young
Could be a leaving present.
Without knowing the boxes dimensions I will go for cuff links or tie pin something along that line
