What3words
I've just added this app. to my mobile. I'm sure you have all seen the ad. on tv? What3words identifies exactly where you are, anywhere in the world - you of course need your phone with you, should you need help. Hopefully it will never be used, but it's free.

Re: What3words
Not only do you need a phone with you, you need a battery that has a charge and it to be able to use apps. Older phones or those running Microsoft OS are not capable.
According to their website older Android phones can use earlier versions, not the latest ones.
I've had it on my phone for a while, hopefully I'll never need it or be in an area where they don't use it for emergency services if I do.

Re: What3words
I installed it recently and as above hope it will never have to be used. A very clever idea though.bulleidboy wrote: ↑Thu Aug 20, 2020 10:34 am I've just added this app. to my mobile. Well I’ve had it for ages. Not much point having a mobile with you if the battery is flat.
My daughters flat mate used it in January when she broke down on a dark country lane. AA found her easily.

Re: What3words
Thanks for the reminder. I've meaning to add this for ages but never got round to it. Just installed it and it gave me my three words for the centre of the house, went out in the garden and got a different three words as I was in a different 3 sq mtrs. What a clever idea. So just went off to tell the missus about it and she says "Oh I put that on my phone ages ago! Doh!
Most people are shocked when they find out how bad I am as an electrician
Re: What3words
my 3 words are No Smart Phone. We still have our original mobiles from 20 years ago. Batterys hold charge for ever. Kept in cars for emergency only.

I like that Rog.
We use the app to identify locations in our fields of bird boxes. Very very useful.

Re: What3words
My main issues with this app are that it apparently needs an internet connection to work out where you are, which in isolated areas you might not have, which makes relying on this app dangerous.
If you are using a smart phone you already have a precise method of getting your location... the maps app. Simply drop a pin where you are and it will give you the Lat&Long. This only requires you to have battery on your phone, and be able to 'see' enough GPS Satellites to fix your location.
Why do we need another service tracking what we are doing, just to give us what we already have?
