Selling my layout

I would appreciate some advice on selling my model railway layout. Essentially it’s an L shape, 9’ by 7’. Baseboards are 2’ Wide. BR (S) and SR based plus Isle of Sight interest.
I have a number of Bachman and Hornsby EMUs, assorted tank engines, all DCC fitted. LSWR, SER, and Southern coaching set. Assorted freight wagons, and the usual buildings etc, some plastic and cardboard kits some modified. DCC concepts pointmotors and levers.

Is it usual to try to sell as complete or would I do better breaking up the collection and selling locos and rolling stock seperate from the baseboards. Has anyone had experience of selling through Hutton’s?

And advice will be very welcome.

My thoughts are to first explore the complete layout route. If no interest then explore the individual sale route.
You could sell the stock off if no interest in both the layout and stock and sell the layout off at a reduced price as an option?
I would avoid selling to a dealer unless you need money quick as you are not likely to get anywhere near what they are worth, as understandably the dealer will have their costs to add and they want to have the option to sell cheap if they don't get the initial interest from their customers.
It is worth doing a little research on eBay and places like that to have a general idea to see if layouts sell. I have known layouts sell at exhibitions in the past.

Hi Richard - You don't mention whether your layout can be dismantled easily. If so, you could try ebay - there are always a number of layouts for sale, from a circle on a board to very elaborate layouts. This might give you an idea of what people are charging and prepared to pay - pick a layout and watch it. I'm not sure if Hatton's buy complete layouts or just stock. BB

Hi Richard, when I sold my N gauge layout a few years ago, I sold the layout complete with stuck down scenics and controller as one lot and the rolling stock separately. The guy who bought the layout was well happy as he didn't want to run steamers but wanted his own Scottish Rail diesels instead! Sell the locos individually and the carriages and wagons in lots - you will get a better return for your efforts.

I sold everything on ebay and the guy who bought the layout drove 100+ mile round trip to collect.

Hattons will only give a fraction of what it could fetch selling by other methods. After all they need to make money of course but that's my experience with Hattons, been there but didn't get the t-shirt!
