Hornby R392 conversion.

Post by Shortstuff »

Apologies if this question has been asked before, but can this loco be converted to DCC?
It has a Type 6 Ringfield motor that I have not seen before, with a wire to only one side of the brush contacts.
Any advice would be gratefully received.

Hi
Yes it can, but it needs special work carried out so as the left hand brush strip is completely insulated from the metal of the motor and all the motor bogie wheels too. The work on the isolation of the left hand strip MUST be tested once work is completed and BEFORE a decoder is fitted. Failure to remove the connection on the left strip will result in immediate decoder failure when on DCC power.

The process is covered here.. scroll down to "Ringfield Motor" heading and then "Ringfield 2" sub heading and use Style 1 or 2 as appropriate Cllick this link to go to the article

Also as the Ringfield motor draws more power then modern motors do, you should use a decoder with a rated motor output of 1.0Amp or higher. Ideally look for a Quality make of decoder like Lenz or Zimo which will offer far superior motor control and adjustments than budget ones do.

The short answer is yes.

Only yesterday I watched a video on how to do the conversion. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C_OCk6rjqqs )
