There is a curve on the Bexleyheath line between Kidbrooke and Eltham (just west of the site of former Eltham Well Hall station) where the radius of the curve is approximately 160 metres. It has a check rail and is restricted to 20mph. In 1972 an express excursion from Margate to Kentish Town hauled by a class 47 tried to negotiate this curve at approximately 60 mph, and derailed spectacularly.
The curve is seen here with the wrecked carriages in the distance, now covered by tarpaulin sheets.
2nd or 3rd radius?
Re: 2nd or 3rd radius?
This is the full story as published on Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eltham_We ... rail_crash and is an interesting read.
