Rough Running

I have a Hornby Standard 4 straight out of the box which is not running at all smoothly.

The wheels revolve by about 3/4 then momentarily stop before jerking back round again.

It is doing this on both the rolling road and track and the problem only goes away when running at full speed.

I have tried lubricating but to no avail.

Any ideas or will it right itself after bedding in?

As its brand new, I would return it to the retailer for replacement or a refund.

Any new loco and depending which one is usually well over a 100 quid, and for that amount of money it's just not worth hoping it will get better as you won't be ever happy with it.

I recently purchased a new R3715 Princess Coronation 'Princess Alexandria' and the retailer assured me it was all good. First out of the box I removed loco from the blister pack leaving the front bogie behind. I accepted that it had just come loose in transit, not so because the bolt was missing that secured the bogie. Curiously i put it on the test track and something was catching in the motion gear.

Anyway it went back just like the Hornby Dublo coach that had TTR stamped on the underside!!

I'm with Brian... send it back to the retailer for replacment or refund.

on a side note... be careful with lubrication, as it is very easy to over lubricate and cause more issues. If you can see oil.. theres too much.

Theoretically an electrically axle driven loco does not need to be quartered unlike the real thing which relies upon the drive side to side being offset radially tomprovide sequential push into the motion.
In fact an electric motored steamer will happily run without any motion gear or rods what so ever.
In practice steam locos seem to run much nicer when quartered correctly.

I disagree Rob. Locos that are not quartered rock and roll like a aged rock star.
