Can't fathom the penalty though. There is an FIA document that clearly defines who should yield during a overtaking manoeuvre depending on the relative positions of the cars. Based on that, there was no infringement.
That was my take on the incident, a first lap coming together with six of one and half a dozen of the other. Both were at fault, yes Hamilton could have aimed more at the apex but likewise there was enough of Hamilton’s car alongside Verstappen for him to know he was there. If you watched Sky, Karun Chandooks replay on the Sky pad, you can see at the the last moment Verstappen gave the steering a twitch towards Hamilton probably to make him ease off, well that was never going to happen! Max could have done what Le Clerc did two laps from the end but he knew playing it safe would have lost him the corner so he rolled the dice.

The accident was horrific but you cannot penalise on the result of the collision but only on the cause. F1 is dangerous and quite minor things can have horrible consequences that any other day would just be a a slight loss of position. Any racer who started to work out the percentages of what might happen with every manoeuvre would soon be out of the sport. I watch F1 not to see people die or suffer major accidents but I do watch to admire these racers use skill and bravery to dice with death.

Blown out of all proportion by Mr. Horner. Wonder what his stance would have been if shoe on other foot!

Strangely enough at the Spanish GP (I believe) Verstappen tried a similar move on Hamilton, this was Horner’s comment at the time.

I agree, Max is no angel and has dished it out himself, just look at some of their other coming together. This aggressiveness is what Red Bull have admired in him just as they have in other drivers like Vettel, remember the multi 21 incident with Webber. Anyone think the outcome would have been any different if the positions had been swapped is kidding themselves. Max has prided himself on his reputation knowing it will make others think twice before committing, well Lewis has laid down a marker now perhaps Max will think twice. I suspect neither will change their approach now so we can expect a fair amount of wheel-banging for the remainder of the season.

The Horner interview with Ted Kravitz was very awkward and has not done Horner anything for his reputation. My opinion on this season is that Red Bull are banking on all other teams including Mercedes switching their focus on the 2022 cars. They seem to be the only ones upgrading this years car and see the change of focus as an opportunity to bag the championship. Unlike Mercedes they have never been the fastest out of the blocks following rule changes this may be behind their thinking.

You can clearly hear from Hamilton's onboard that he lifted just before the corner, Verstappen thought he would be smart by keeping his foot down to sail around the outside but he got it wrong turned in too soon, clipped Hamilton's front wheel and stuffed the car, his fault entirely.
