We spent a few days away in Norfolk. First holiday in what seems ages thanks to Covid.

We have been , several times, but clearly remember my first trip, We got down to just before crossing (bredon Water), or similar, and asked about how to proceed. A guy in uniform, said for normal boats, on you go, but for Sewing Machines, you will need to wait here till tide turns. Next time, we got a bigger boat.

It is a regional sport in East Anglia watching folk make fools of themselves in the boats.
Stopping at a pub for lunch on a river is good to watch as most folk try to do it going downstream, step off to tie up the front end and the current takes the back end away down river. The correct way of course is to drive upstream and hold the boat against the current whilst tying off.
The other oft seen problem but much more dangerous is getting the tide wrong - as John says it is more powerful than the toy boat engine and day boats especially are often swept under the bridge and founder. As stated get a bigger boat or wait for the tide to change.

We just toured the area. Did not go on a boat, but the 'call of the water' is too big.

Now we are going on a long awaited cruise.
