This video inspired by a trip long time ago, in 1964, to the USSR. Even as a small child I knew it to be a grim place, rotten with despair.
I recall the locomotive on our "express" was pulled by something like this:
There were two classes, "hard" and "soft." We road in "soft" which consisted of a fabric somewhat like iron, dark brown, and abrasive as sandpaper. Unforgettable. Still, I love a train.
