I did not realise we were talking about surface mount motors. I agree with Brian making sure the moving parts are not binding on the baseboard is essential and thin packers underneath the motor housing are perfect for that. As for mounting on a curved point, do the motors not have an extension bar that can be used to place the motor further away from stock rails? If not something fashioned from a short length of wire would help it might not look quite as realistic but would be one of the many compromises that are made when modelling model railways unless you are into fine-scale.

Great advice again. Now have 11 of them installed and working well. Once you get the 'knack' of installing them, they go down without too much fuss. Did the Y points and curve install fairly quickly in the end. Some I used a thin piece of card to level out with the points.
To join the cables to each other I stripped about 15mm off each end, twisted them together face on and then soldered. Covered with heat shrink. Never used heating shrink before but pretty impressed with the results.
