I would have thought you might be able to use the "sweepings" from a stone yard - there must be a spoil heap at most stone yards. If you modelling, even in 0 gauge the pieces of stone/rock are going to be very small.

There are some lovely kits on the market as Brian’s pictures show us. I have also seen A4 card used the one on the back of Amazon envelopes. These can be cut to different sizes, glued on top of one another and then painted and weathered.

I nearly had a heart attack when I looked at those prices, until I realised they were for lifesize items.
