A good job - I thought the sound was realistic. I note the Bachmann 08 appears to have a flywheel - would there be more room inside the Hornby 08?
It seems a pity when these sounds kits are introduced, you then have to carve up your loco.
No idea if there is more room in the Hornby version Barry, I don’t have one. When I bought my two the Hornby version was significantly more expensive.
I presume that the latest Hornby ones have space for the TTS gubbins but the Bachmann ones that I have were never designed to take anything like that. I failed to persuade the memsahib that a trip to Margate to get a second decoder was a good idea, which is why I ended up repainting the shed.
The memsahib suggested we go out for the afternoon, even though it had been bucketing down all morning.
On our way to Whitstable for the afternoon, I took the opportunity to call in to the modelshop in Faversham - not been there since they moved premises - and was pleasantly surprised to find TTS decoders for only £35 each, including the latest releases.
Another 08 and a P2 are now waiting for installation.
That’s the second 08 done. Curiously it wouldn’t program to start with, so I had to resort to the ‘program on main’ trick that usually kicks the TTS decoders into life.
The P2 will be a little trickier to do as I have the Railroad version with the decoder socket in the loco rather than the tender.
I was wrong. That has to be one of the easiest non-TTS ready conversions I have done.
After insulating the decoder, it will fit above the decoder socket and still leave enough space to tuck away all the harness wires. I as looking to extend the speaker wires back to the tender but found that the fixed pony truck is hollow - exactly the right size and shape for a sugarcube speaker.
Next is to upgrade the cheap Hornby lettering with some suitable transfers.
May I ask you Steve, have you just bought that P2 and if so would you be kind enough to tell me the numbers or any ID on the motor as I am interested to learn if Hornby have upgraded the motor on this model, If they have I want to fit the new motor to my P2 .........John
If only there was enough hours in the day..................John
