When did the Modern Wagons listed below run on the GW Main Line?

#1

Post by Tallpaul70 »

Hi to you All,
I am looking for information on the whether the "modern" wagons listed below were seen on the GW mainline between Slough and Reading in the following years- 1977,1992, 2007, 2016:-

It would be helpful if I can find out whether they more usually ran in blocks or singly?

Wagons
HOP24/HUO
Cemflow/PVC
PCO/PCA Cement
PFA Container Flat
PRA Box

I realise that not all these wagons were in use in all the years stated above.

I am looking for this information to help decide which of these wagons, and in what quantities to purchase for my 00 gauge layout which may run in the above mentioned years.

Many thanks
Best regards
Paul

I seem to recall the littlw 4 wheel cemet wagons (Can't remember the codes. They are the ones Airfix used to make) used to run in rakes of about 14 or there abouts into Aberthaw Cement Works. I maybe wrong.. I saw a picture in a book I have called "Western Region In Wales".

The following is a rough guide only -

HOP24/HUO
Introduced 1958 and in use until 1990 when all scrapped. Used mainly in the North East of England, Yorkshire and East Midlands, a few used in in East Kent in 1960s / 1970s. Use on GWML not common, if ever. Unlikely between Slough and Reading.

Cemflow/PVC
Introduced 1961 to 1966 and on use until about 1983, all then scrapped. Used originally on dedicated flow from North Kent cement works to Scotland via ECML, later from Hope Valley to Dewsbury, and Scotland, and internally in Scotland. Not seen on GWML. Unlikely between Slough and Reading.

PCO/PCA Cement
Assuming there are new Accurascale models, [STS 10600 - 10651, APCM/BCC 10838-10849] introduced 1980- 1982 there were again used from North Kent, North East England and Scotland, some STS vehicles used from Westbury so these may have appeared on GWML from time to time.

PFA Container Flat
Introduced 1986, some worked between South Wales and Ellesmere Port so would be seen on GWML west of Bristol. Others worked in North East England and Yorkshire. Unlikely between Slough and Reading.

PRA Box
Introduced 1983 Clay Hood working from Cornwall to Scotland, so seen on GWML west of Bristol. Unlikely between Slough and Reading.

NOTE
The CPV / PCV 'Presflo' wagons (Airfix / Dapol/ Bachmann models) were commonly used between 1955 until 1985ish all over BR. Will have been seen in goods trains but unlikely in block loads between Slough and Reading.

Many thanks LC&DR for clear and useful information, which confirms my somewhat hazy feelings on the facts!

Best regards
