Painting Figures - OO scale

#1

Post by RogerB »

After an eye-watering amount of concentration I have managed to get some paint on some figures.

The two at the back on the right and the man in the beige jacket I did today - they are from Hardy's Hobbies. The grey figures with just flesh completed and the red one are a mixture of Hardy's and ModelU [via Pendon].

The chap in the middle at the back in the Ochre jacket was a cheapo figure that I used for practice. As you can see, I need more!

Have struggled a bit with weathering the pristine finish down. I need to get some Acrylic thinners I think, the light dusting with weathering powder is not having the right effect.

I think it was PannierTank that put some tips on figure painting on here some time ago. When I did mine recently, I used Matt paints than dry brushed a lighter shade to pick up highlights on the clothing and finished off with a black wash to darken creases.
I didn’t do it on mine but a final spray with Matt or satin varnish may help.

What do you think of the Hardy’s figures?

Thanks Steve. I don't have sprayer, all down to manual dexterity, sadly. R-

I think PT’s tips were dotted around his various posts - admittedly they were demonstrated on O gauge figures, but the principles are still valid.

I have yet to use I, but I have some Vallejo matt varnish on order (£2.50 for a small bottle) should work perfectly well with a brush. I find the equivalent Humbrol Matt varnish is absolutely rubbish - leaves streaks and stains everywhere.

I'll give it a try. Still time to add it to my order. R-

They look fine Roger - I hadn't heard of Hardy figures until Steve/Brian (WTD) mentioned them the other day. I had a look at there (Hardy's) site, and there are some great figures available - will be adding to my shopping list. Barry

Cracking work there Roger. Far far better than I could hope to achieve.

BB, I hadn’t heard of them at all until I saw a brief review in one of the mags recently.
I was mightily impressed with the quality, the extent of their range and the competitive pricing - probably won’t buy from anywhere else in future.
The painting is time consuming but the fine detail actually makes them easy to paint and pick out details.

Indeed there are some great poses - much wider selection than ModelU, who I suppose will catch up, and as Steve says a pound or so cheaper.
