Private owner wagons

Back in the day, did private owner wagons actually carry what was written on the side? I'm sure that in the case of stuff like coal, aggregates wood etc they would have, but what about - say - a wagon with 'Persil' or 'Weetabix' on the side? Were such wagons in fact mobile advertising hoardings, which could contain any number of different products?

A lot of those wagons probably didn’t exist. Much like the Hornby version with Fathers Day on it. Was it full of fathers?

If they existed they would have worked in the private sidings of these companies. Huntley and Palmers had some that were used at their factory in Reading, as did Cadburys at their factory.

Hmm, good point, and thanks - I'm trying to avoid as much fictitious stuff as possible. I wonder if Hornby actually get advertising revenue from some of these companies?

The Father's day and Santa wagons - a bit of a given that they are fictitious, much like the entire Thomas the Tank stuff. I suppose I was meaning more the Palethorpes Sausages, Weetabix, Persil, Pickfords Removals type of thing, which at least look plausible and use the vintage logos of the era 3 or 4 periods.

Palethorpes are real and probably Pickfords but probably 90% are just a bit of fun.
