Triang smoke unit
Triang smoke unit
As Cyprus seems to be going into lockdown I bought myself a few locos as a restoration project
One of which is a triang hornby 0-6-0 with a syncrosmoke unit, the problem is the heating element is damaged...
any ideas on what I can use to make another one ? Or perhaps a way to fix it

A little dingy , but I’ll get there

Re: Triang smoke unit
Are you talking about the Triang-Hornby JInty? I have one of those from long long ago. My engine came with a little bulb of oil, when that ran out I never bothered getting any more.
You can get the smoke units on eBay, but they usually cost as much as the complete engine.

Hi
Have a look at Peters Spares, they may have replacement smoke units and smoke oil too? The Seuthe range are the usual replacements but ensure you obtain one that's of the same size. They vary in price from around £10.50 to £30.00. https://www.petersspares.com/scenics-se ... -units.irc

Re: Triang smoke unit
Seeing as they cost so much I might as well buy another engine and have the other one for spares at this point

Re: Triang smoke unit
You don't have to use the smoke unit to run, or do you? Silly question perhaps but I have no experience of these.

On DC you can’t switch the smoke unit off but the element will still heat up which is probably not a good thing. I am referring to the original Triang/Hornby unit.

You don’t need to have the smoke working
But I’d just like to have that effect seeing as almost all of my steam locos have some sort of steam xd

Re: Triang smoke unit
Trouble is it isn’t good for the smoke unit to just heat up without any oil in it. Seem to remember it gets too hot and starts to cause things to melt or crack.

Re: Triang smoke unit
Surely you can disconnect the wiring or is it hard wired through the chassis?

Re: Triang smoke unit
Well yes but in that case it might as well be removed. If it is fitted and wired it should be used.
