Granite setts and buffers

#1

Post by Bandit Mick »

A bit of advice please. If a short siding is set into granite setts/cobbles then what is used as a buffer? Or aren’t sidings set into cobbles/setts in the first place?
PS Sorry for the use of set so often - hope I haven’t confused anyone other than myself! 🤪

Ordinary sidings aren’t usually in anything, just track laid on the ground, often without much ballast. I reckon track is usually only laid in granite setts where vehicles need to cross the track, a dockside railway for instance.
As for buffers I would suggest what ever buffers you want to use. Those made with rail are my preferred choice.

Thanks WTD as always. As I’m modelling an industrial setting and using setts across the area, I assume that buffers would be laid on the ground just after the setts as they would not be laid on top of the setts as there would be no Anchorage point? Alternatively, some old sleepers beyond the setts would also suffice I suppose.

The rail type buffers were, I believe, welded/bolted to the track.

Morning Sligo Rover. For the granite setts look at the section called ‘On the workbench’ then look for ‘Altered Austin K2 Dropside Lorry’. On Page 1 I have put a description of how I did the setts on my micro- ish layout. If you need further info, feel free to re-post.
