SKY Q - Upgrade??

For those that may be thinking of an upgrade - we had Sky Q installed yesterday, having had Sky+ for many years. We have multi-room - main TV in living room and smaller tv in dining room - although both TV's have been around for some years, they were both classed as "Smart". With Sky Q, you get a main box, hard wired to the aerial (as before), you also get a new aerial. The much smaller box in the dining room is wireless - no connection to the aerial, and it is a satellite of the main box (you can have up to four). The slight drawback as far as SWMBO is concerned is that SKY Q does not have the reminder service - when watching one programme a banner used to come across the bottom of the screen telling you the other programme you wished to watch was about to start - to SWMBO this may be a game-changer - we will see. SKY Q is also programmed for all other services (assuming you have an account), such as Netflix and Youtube - if I want to watch something on Youtube on the "big-screen" I now can. It all appears to work ok.

The main advantage to me was that the SKY Q package was about £11 a month cheaper than what we had before.

Thanks for the info Barry. I have been thinking about upgrading but our dish is on a pole on the chimney. Has to be high to see above the trees. I understand that sky don’t do chimneys any more so the new dish would have to go on the side of the house.

Hi Brian - the new dish looks just like the old one - but new(!), it has a different wall mount, but went in exactly the same place as the old one, and if the guy had not gone up the ladder to change it, it could have been sometime before I noticed the change. Our aerial is on the far side of the house, next to the chimney stack - which we had added to the house many years ago - no fireplaces in mid-seventies houses. My biggest problem, is that in the summer, the Virginia Creeper that used to be on four sides of the house, now only two, has to be trimmed to stop it growing over the aerial. Barry

Our dish has since the beginning been on a long pole. We don't have a chimney and the location was determined by the height of trees opposite the house. When we got Sky Q they simply did a swap.

It maybe the case they don't do chimneys - but is that for new installations or for replacement ones too. Be brave, phone Sky up and wait in their queue and ask them. (or try the online chat bot if they have one!)

Without Sky no TV. Ordinary aerials won’t work so each to his own.

You dont have to use sky if you have a dish. Get yourself a Freesat player or recorder and just plug your dish cable into that. No need to adjust the dish, no subscription, plenty of channels including HD.
