Hornby Unrebuilt West Country 'Wilton'

Post by MervynJSt0kes »

I have a Hornby model of an unrebuillt West Country Pacific, 'Wilton'. It's a really good runner, and I want to put a sound decoder in the loco. Has anyone else put a sound decoder in this or similar Hornby loco ? If so what decoder did you use please ? From the measurements I have taken, I think that a Zimo 645 (30mmx15mmx4mm) would just go in the loco, sitting on the top of the block of metal that provides the weight to the model. This decoder has a greater power output than the Digitrax non sound decoder it has successfully run with for several years, hence I would rather use this than the smaller 648 with its lower output. Situating the decoder there would also allow the speaker to be located in the loco, rather than in the tender.

I have not done it, but this may help?

Wilton came out a long time ago, before DCC was introduced, so the space inside the body is different to that on a DCC Fitted or DCC Ready loco. The one in the link is R2926 Blandford Forum, which was a later model that was DCC Ready so "may" have more space inside.

Thanks for the link, the photos, combined with the make of the decoder were very useful as a guide to what will fit into the loco.
