Hornby R2057 Class 9f problems

my loco had issues running the connecting rods were sticking and now the motor is `whiiring` and not moving

whats happened

Valve gear as jammed. Just needs freeing

When you pick the loco up do you do so by gripping each side of the wheels, some do this and it can bend the connecting rods.

Thanks gents, i wont be able to sort it myself so i just have to decid do i pay to get it sorted or do i use is as an an ornament in a siding

Suggest you turn the loco upside down in a sporting cradle and carefully look down at each sides Con rods that connect wheel to wheel.
If one side looks more bent inwards (or outwards) than the other side carefully adjust each rod with the aid of Tweezers to become straight and in the same plane are the opposite side, assuming that side is correct?

i looked at the loco upside down, the rods look ok what i did notice and i`m no expert is the wheels on the loco have a lot of sideway play in them, all the little screws are tight but can the "lateral movement` on the wheels cause the rods to stick

i did think of sending it to the hornby repair centre

The 9F does have lots of side play. Can you see where the rods are sticking?

It’s tender drive isn’t it. If the motor is turning and the loco doesn’t move maybe the cog on the motor shaft has split.

well i looked at it but chickened out of trying to sort it myself !!!

Crank pin screw loose, that’s why the motion locks up
Driving wheels loose on axles, will secure with Loctite Retainer (proper stuff)
Pinion gear on motor loose on shaft. Design flaw when the accountants changed the material from brass to aluminium. Will strip down and fit a proper brass one
