Can I shorten a Hornby R083 buffer stop ? Is there any problem after doing that ? Thanks.

No. I’ve done it many times. Just glue it in place.

It's nice to see someone else has come up with the same solution as I was thinking of doing. Space is going to be a bit tight for sidings on the layout I'm making for my son and was thinking the same thing.
