Dapol OO Class 121 & 122 Railtrack Livery - stopped running

#1

Post by PBoland »

Evening folks, seldom run but just stopped today. No traction but motor running no problem. Further investigation revealed that the dual drive only working one end. So I guess poor traction no go…
Spin the motor and one steel drive shaft not turning see photos. Any idea how the steel drive is fixed to the motor or how I could repair. Thanks in advance.

You need one of these. https://www.dccsupplies.com/shop/class- ... ive-shaft/ If both brass flywheels are turning. The motor lifts out and driveshafts slot in to flywheel.

Thanks for the reply, just one brass wheel is turning, so does it have 2 drive shafts, one for each end. If I remove the motor it should be clearer? All very delicate 🙈

Yes they have two driveshafts, they usually move with only one driveshaft so it sounds like something has locked up. The other test is to remove the bogies and run motor one bogey at a time. With the bogey removed you can draw the shafts out and inspect them. For now leave the motor in place.

When you get the driveshaft out, look at the black yolk at the end, it may well be loose and turning on shaft. This is a very common fault.

Yep, that was it. Plastic drive slipping on shaft, fixed it tested and lasted a few runs. Either new shaft or some other permanent fix in the plan. Bit of a poor design!
Thanks again for the help. 👍

Well done, it has to be oil free and a spot of super glue works sometimes, a new shaft is best.
