First of all the solder may be an issue. The modern lead-free solder has a higher melting point and is harder to solder with. See if you can get some leaded 60/40 solder. We have mostly Limes at the side of our road and I commented to my wife a few days ago that the leaves were coming down early this year. We haven't had a lot of rain so that might be a factor.
