I converted a kiddies toy into a bogie coach. It is almost finished... But I do have thoughts to convert it into two 4 wheel coaches instead. I am not 100% sure as yet though. When I made the conversion the coach used to be blue. It only had two doors on the one side of the coach and one end of the coach had a large open vestible door with a corridor connection to it.

I decided to close this off, and make doors on the other side of the coach. The doors that were already there were recessed, so I had to add strips of plasticard to build up the recess until it was flush. Also I built up the internal area of the new door side of the coach so it matched.

As the toy chassis had 8 non flanged wheels which were not pivoted, I needed to convert it to work on rails, so I removed the old chassis and mounted it on a new chassis. The new chassis was an old half wrecked Jouef chassis which was shortened, and it also had an old Triang underframe bolted onto it. I have yet to change the couplings. I have hung back for now due to the thought of converting them into two smaller coaches which look like a simple enough conversion.


I managed to find where the coach had come from. They are sold as kiddies toys and come as a loco and a coach in either red or blue. There is zls a green loco and a huge tender. The locos saddle tank and boiler are actually the right size to use for a future 7mm narrow gauge conversion project. My theory is... New cab, new chimney and a suitable 00 gauge chassis and all going well... A working 7mm narrow gauge loco. The loco upper body is cast metal so it will give some nice weight to it.

My nephew has been staying and he had seen the free kit in the Railway Modeller of a little lineside hut. He did a nice job and he enjoyed it.
He wanted to build waggons in 7mm narrow gauge so I let him design his own. He had difficulty in finding ways to fit the wheels, so as I had been given some 00 gauge wagon chassis from someone in this forum (Which I am greatful for as they have come in useful), I decided these were ideal, and so far he has built three waggons.
Now because of his enthusiasm, I donated one of my unmade 7mm narrow gauge Smallbrook Studio kits. I also have someone from the USA from an autism site who likes what I make and asked if I would make one and send it for her Dad, so the second kit I had spare is heading that direction.
They are Smallbrook Studio "Thor" kits and fair play. They have been straightforward and easy to assemble. The only real small area (Apart from the usual filing things to fit) were that I needed to ream out the inside of the fireboxes prior to fitting, so the motor housing on the chassis will fit. Other then that, all has been great.

I thought I would share a little waggon I made. I had set myself a challenge to make a waggon out of lollypop sticks and tea sturers. It is not quite finished yet.

Here it is now it has some paint added. The paint was rescued and was more the consistency of a damper form of shoe polish. Well. I can't waste paint that I had paid for a decade or two ago can I? And it is well in keeping with my building aaggos to a budget theme. It actually looks good to me, as it displays the worn and used look.

Thanks WTD. Is not quite finished yet, but it is almost done. Buffers, couplings and a little weight to be added to finish it off.
I can see you building a little narrow gauge feeder on your new layout. Any plans?

Yes definitely but not yet. Some sort of industrial area.

Good plan. Prehaps an early diesel loco and a few waggons? Track is easy. Just use old 00 gauge track and either hide the sleepers, or buy a board or two of PCB and cut some strips off it with a dremel and a cutting disc or another tool. When replacing sleepers from 00 gauge, only remove a few 00 gauge sleepers at a time so you keep the gauge intact. It saves having to worry about keeping the gauge in check.
PCB is usually a little thinner then the plastic sleepers so while soldering, pack underneath with something (I use card) to ensure the sleepers are soldered at the right height. Of course, Peco sell 0-16.5 track, but I find it a little pricey, especially since I already have 00 gauge track to convert.
